25 – Compliance reviews

Introduction

Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) regularly checks (‘reviews’) the case files kept on legally assisted matters by:

  • VLA in-house lawyers
  • community legal centres who are members of VLA’s Section 29A Practitioner Panel
  • private law firms and private lawyers who are members of VLA’s Section 29A Practitioner Panel.

VLA does not currently review the case files of private law firms and private lawyers who are members of VLA’s Section 30 Referral Panel or the case files of independent children’s lawyers.

This section explains the review process and the effect of non-compliance with its requirements by assigned lawyers. It also explains how lawyers may seek internal reconsideration by VLA of its compliance decisions and independent review.
